Oh for the love of sleep

We are having sleep problems. Specifically we are having little boy going to bed problems. Lately both of the boys spend a large time pushing bedtime…

“….five more minutes of the story.”
“….just one more round on the game before we get ready for bed.”
“…I’m hungry.”
“…I’m thirsty.”

We’ve been working albeit unsuccessfully as curbing those small before they are in bed problems. But once little bodies are in beds a whole new crop come up…

“…what was that noise?”
“…I think I heard thunder!”
“…I need to tell you this important thing.”
“…I’m scared of (fill in the blank of the latest disturbing thing.)

To say I am frustrated is actually putting it mildly. I know I’ve been fortunate in that I have not had to deal with years of bedtime issues. However I’m dealing with them now and that knowledge is little solace for me. Lil’B in particular is having a very difficult time actually falling asleep. And often is repeatedly out of bed that first hour after we’ve settled him.

We’ve cut back on screens (computer, video games and tv) but perhaps we need to cut back even further. And a small part of me thinks that perhaps we are missing bedtime according to their bodies what with the increased activity. There are days I somewhat want them to have the internal bedtime clock my little sister had as a child. My little sister would realize she’s tired and simply say good night. Off to bed she’d trot. My boys are up until we push them towards bed.

Throwing a routine altering stay-cation into the mix and as you can imagine we’ve had a long week here at our house. A long somewhat sleepless week.

Summer is almost here…

I can tell because the sand had started showing up!

I love our sandbox! Even though it makes me sweep our house daily AND scrub the tub out after every single bath. The sheer amount of imaginative play that is created with just a box of sand and a hose of water is worth to much to worry about the cleaning.

Thus far they’ve built the Great Wall of China and Pompeii along with several different volcanoes in search of the “best” eruptions. But later it could be the Nile River Delta and the biggest castle in the world!

Then again maybe they’ll just flood the whole thing for the fun of splashing in the sandy water.

A wheel on a stick

First there was the boy and the wheel on a stick.

The boys rolled the wheel on a stick.

Then the boy ran with the wheel on a stick.

The boys zigged and zagged with the wheel on a stick.

And the boy smiled.

Joy of a wheel on a stick

A few weeks ago Gramps got out the “seeder” a nifty contraption that allows you to put seeds in a compartment turn the dial to the right seed and wheel it down the row to plant. Lil’B grabbed it and wheeled away with it. Unfortunately it’s a tool and not really meant to zip through the garden at little boy mph’s. There is a gear piece to it that is delicate give its age. So we had to stop him. Later than night Gramps and I got to talking about the upcoming Birthday when Gramps said “I should make him a wheel for the garden.” I agreed and in fact pushed him to do it. Such a simple gift but such a wonderful one too. The little wheel on stick has zipped in our garden, wheeled around the front yard and already experience two “accidents” necessitating a trip to the repair shop. The great thing about that is a simple gift is also simple to repair and before you know Lil’B is back zipping around the place again with his wheel on a stick.
