Why I love DSA….

DSA or Dragon Slayer’s Academy by Kate McMullan just might be the series that will get my dear Jr. to jump from being a boy who can read to being a reading boy.

We met Wiglaf last year via an audiobook. The first book peaked Jr’s interest thus we went on to listen to the next four books. We picked up book five several weeks ago as a bedtime read aloud. One delicious (at least according to the children) chapter at a time we read that book to them. And the same with number six, seven and now eight.

I like Wiglaf because he’s kind, loyal and smart. He’s also small, lacking a bit of self-esteem and financially poor. His character has some real issues that he continually works to triumph. There are those characters that are mean but not such that it’s painful as I find with many chapter books. The “bad guys” are often more silly than mean. The adventure is full of minor miss-steps that keep the characters in state of “what’s next?!” The wizard Zelnoc is wry and amusing. For some reason that character has a specific voice inside my head that is hilarious which makes reading the books also enjoyable to me.

The books are tantalizing to my boy. He picks them up to stare at the pages or perhaps the pictures? He’s quite focused when I peek at him. Perhaps he’s reading them. It is that thought that stops me from interrupting him. In either case the characters and world of DSA is bringing out the enjoyment of the reading in my son. I truly think that his continued interest in the DSA chapters has given him a greater understanding of how to enjoy a chapter book. Using that new understanding we’ve been able to launch into other books like Pagoo by Holling C. Holling, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table along with some other books that are “mama’s picks” with great joy in us all!

Almost 7

Jr. has a birthday coming up and so my mind has already begun aging him to be a full-fledge 7. He’s now in this in between stage of “almost 7″. I find that I’m aging him when I talk and I’m wondering what will celebrate this birthday for him. Our idea list is slim. And some of my ideas will end up being Christmas presents as I sit and shuffle things around.

Idea #1 – Walkie Talkies. Good idea but this would actually work as a bigger gift for both of the boys at Christmas. Mental note to shift this to the Christmas list.

Idea #2 – Microscope. Awesome idea but Yikes the prices. Entertain a conversation with Grandpa about maybe going into together on this together the next time the group buy comes. Great plan but that means this will be much, much closer to Christmas.

Idea #3 – good chess set – only problem with this idea is that we just picked up a dinosaur checkers set that Jr. figured out will also work as DINO CHESS. Shot in the foot by my own self!

Gah! Anybody have some good ideas for a 7 year old’s birthday present?

Music Lessons

I finally made a decision about what class Lil’B will be taking this fall. I had considered putting him in Violin but we weren’t sure of so many things that I’m opting to wait on that idea. So Lil’B will begin in Piano. Perhaps he’ll transition later??

With Jr. it was seemingly easier. We plunked him in front of the piano and within days knew that we’d found something that spoke to him. Lil’B has always been a bit harder to pin down. This would be one of those moments where I’m sondering if my decisions for my son are more “right” than “not-right”. I realize that agony over the music lesson choice for a 4 year old probably seems a little silly.

So I’ll have two lessons this fall instead of one. That too has weighed on my mind whispering things about “busy”. I am determined to not overschedule us. But it does seem like I’m on standing in front of display with all these shiny, sparkly opportunities trying to pick the best choice for our family out of a dozens of sparkly, shiny, things. Which few things to pick? Which to leave behind? blah……..

But back to lessons. This I’m pleased with – I think. Their lessons didn’t match up at all for a same day option so I chose to have them be two days apart. To spread the driving and hopefully make it more likely that we can combine each lesson day with something else “out of the house”. We’re getting better at doubling-up though I still need some practice at getting to things on time. (Can we just say afflicition – late-itis is a chronic illness that flares up at odd moments usually with a small voice chiming “I need to go potty” directly after being buckled into the carseat or alternatively when a mama-brain chimes “you forgot “X” right after loading the kids up!)
