10 hours and 24 minutes

A little over 8 months ago Jr. saw what he coined as “Darth Vader’s Ship” at the toy store. This was a rather expensive lego set and we felt a worthy goal for a boy who really wanted something. The price tag with no discounts was over $100. So Jr. started saving and counting up every single penny he had.  Jr. has been saving for almost six months towards this goal.

Then we got the Black Friday Ad. The exact lego set was on sale for $40 dollars off. A savings too important to ignore. Limited quantities of course. So what is a Daddy to do but get up at 5am to run to the local target at a bit after 6am  – - for a boy whose saved for 6 months. Thankfully since we are not in a hurry and such it was a relatively leisurely trip for our intrepid toy hunter.

A few hours later when Jr. awoke he immediately began counting out his money to pay back his Daddy. And was the happy purchaser of the “Lego Darth Vader Ship” of his little boy dreams.

Big Lego Project

Thus began our marathon lego project for the weekend. Jr. put this massive project together almost all by himself. Only asking for bits of help when he needed to hold one piece steady while attaching another. (Sorry for the blurry hands. There was too much excitement to get a spectacular picture.)

lego mania

And after almost 10 hours and 24 minutes* of reading schematics, finding pieces, and snapping legos together he was finally finished and ready to play!

A few adjustments

Finally Finished!

I know he’s happy with himself for all the different “work” that went into saving for and building the final product. I know he’s delighted with some of the hidden features of the ship and with his tiny lego Darth Vader complete with red light saber. Me? I’m happy with the fact he’s so very proud of himself today.

*total time isn’t really exact. Jr. started working on it on Friday mid-morning and didn’t quit till almost bedtime. Then he worked most of Saturday too. Though the breaks were a little more frequent as his brother was persistent in his desires to play together. But I figure 10+ hours is a pretty good guesstimate.

In pursuit of that perfect picture

Every year I grab a dozen or so photos trying to get that one decent picture of the boy in his birth month. This years session for Jr. was much, much larger in photo number than ever before. Between camera shake (me) and wiggles (him) we have lots of blurry, twisted and sometimes a bit freaky photos. But I managed to find two that didn’t come out too bad:

Jr. 7 Take 109

Do you think we need to try again for that portrait picture? These do very much show who he is right at this moment.

Seven

My dear Jr. is now a seven year old. He recently got a trim (just a trim! not to much off the top!) and seems to look even more grownup than normal. We had a very nice slow birthday. His dear Uncle K. came down to spend the day with us and of course we had lots and lot of Star Wars. Both the boys were happily playing “axshun figgers” as our Lil’B says most of the day. We had a cake that Jr. decorated himself as he draws a much better Boba Fett than I do!  We had boyish sword fights where my laser blaster sounds were picked on! I’m not practiced enough I guess so my laser blaster is weak! LOL We enjoyed a lovely day probably one of the last few we will have this fall. Though I may be wrong. Then today we saw the live action Walking with Dinosaurs. Very cool. Jr. gave it a big thumbs up!

Let’s see Seven has seemed like a significant birthday this year. Mostly because Jr. has deemed it so. He’s a young man now and can’t pass for a little boy. This both thrills and frustrates him. He sometimes desires to stay little for a bit longer which is perfectly fine with us. And then there are days when I see the responsible man he will become. He’s a very big helper now. And I have to be sure to remember to give him proper credit for all the help he gives in picking up messes, helping with the baking and generally being good sport about keeping our spaces more tidy. Tidy….that something we all are working on here!

He’s interested in science and learning to brave his fears in order to learn more about things we find like bugs, spiders, insects and toads. He spent the summer working on managing his blossomed fear of bees and wasps. A very mature thing to do since the fear was real and solid in his mind from the stings in the past. He takes an interest in thinking or perhaps I should say he takes an interest in discussing his thinking. The conversations are more varied and sometimes much deeper than I’ve expected. Then there are days where is all about Boba Fett and which droid did what!

Pictures soon to be added soon.
