Potential

This is a very bad photo of our garden. But there is a reason for that! Our neighbors lovely house is north of the garden. So the pictures I have of the full garden include a very nice shot of the house. Didn’t think the neighbors would appreciate that. All those sticks right in the front are the boys’ plots. I can’t wait to take a similar picture in a month or two!!

Lil’B's favorite pastime is playing with the hoses and the nozzles. He’s my favorite pretend firefighter :)

Plotting out his garden with an eye for needed spacing. Such a cutie pie!

Taking a week off….

We had a tense day or two last week navigating some vision issues with our Jr. or more precisely playing a stressful game of elimination to arrive at the conclusion that his vision issues had nothing to do with his fall earlier in the week or anything else that we had going on. I now believe it was just an unfortunate convergence of events that had us leaping from normal to panic.

Things to know:

Jr. is fine though he sees funny because of a convergence insufficiency though since we’ve stopped TALKING about it he’s not being bothered with any daily activities. Reading = fine. Video games = fine. Eye Exercises = still funny so he’s doing them.

This may require more intervention than the “pencil push ups” assigned by our Eye Doctor.

Asking a 7 yr old questions about when something started happening is …just awful. Especially when you have other things that could have perpetuated the problem IF the problem was related to the fall which I now suspect it wasn’t. If you think that is confusing now imagine being a freaked-out mama.

Things to also know:

I saw my husband once last week. His hours are at the peak of the season.

My kids are needing a teensy break from mama and Mama is needing a teensy break from them. We aren’t hearing each other very well which makes for long and difficult days.

This is the busiest week of the entire tax season because we have several extra events this week. This week also includes a trip for my husband. I would really like it to be a good week…..

Conclusion: I am taking a blog break this week. I need sometime to research Jr.’s eye thing and just some time to decompress. I imagine I’ll still be on twitter but I’m just not up to focusing on actual content here. Though I may post some of those pictures that are on my camera since I did find my camera cord tonight! Content though will come back next week or rather the daily musings of my frazzled mind….which I am not sure qualifies as “content”.

HA HA HA HA!!

ISU Science Night for Homeschoolers

DSCF1661

One word: Awesome.

Okay more words. It was pleasantly crowded but not overwhelming according to my dear husband. The organizers made my son’s night when they announced that SCUM (Society for Undergraduate Chemistry Majors) would be putting on a demonstration for the group at large. He had picked this as a “thing to do” but was younger than the targeted age range. So my dear Jr. was already declaring this night a success in the first minutes. SCUM blew stuff up and did a cotton ball on fire experiment. The cotton ball one was quite impressive since the young man demonstrating held it IN HIS HAND when they lit it. I just wish I could type the way it is to hear Jr. talk about it!

Jr. got to see the Insect Zoo too which was also tops on his list. He built a model with legos (moving 2d to 3d). He looked at how water runoff can destroy/damage things. (He brought the how of this experiment home and last week the boys did this one at home too). He was able to build a circuit of some sort with alligator clips and batteries. He made a candy DNA strand which was fun because he had an “error” in one of his pairings. That error led to several discussions here at home on DNA. He came home with a simple toy and a long explanation of how it behaves here versus in space.

And about another 20 minutes or so of just telling us what he saw and did. I was excited when I first heard ISU was hosting science night. After the fact I’m still excited and am hoping they do this annually because I have a little guy who really wants to go “next time”!
