The year is winding down for us here at Greenfield Academy for Boys. In the past few weeks we’ve spent a lot of time working on our outdoor projects one of which is the garden plots. Jr’s plot is almost 100% taken care of by himself! And he’s doing a fabulous job of it. So much so he’s making me look bad. But then I forgive myself because I’m certain if I was only responsible for a small parcel I’d be much more weed free too! But back to Jr. He’s showing a lot of dedication and some time management too with his garden work. Hands-on science FTW!

We finished up our Math work about a week ago. Shortly after Jr. found the books for next year. I had casually said with little thought that he couldn’t have them just yet. I finished my statement with “you’ll have to wait about a month or so.” Later that day a mopey boy told his dad that he couldn’t “do math for a whole month because mom said.” I promised to make him do maths in some fashion between books. We’ll be playing a lot of our favorite math games in June. 

This year history was awesome! We used the SOTW audio as our spine. And we’ve listened to the entire book a few times. We’re on our way back through it again now without taking the days of repeats on each disc. Several of the discs were favorites thus having multiple playings.  We have a bit of map work left to complete and have been waiting for a rainy day to spend curled up with the map books.

Reading…ahh reading. How delightful is it to hear “just a minute I need to finish this page.” That is a phrase that I have been hearing a lot lately. And I’ve been noticing a significant increase in voluntarily grabbing a book. As a women who has books all over and reads for the pleasure of reading this sight warms my heart. One better: both boys in our big blue chair reading books together on their own steam. Nate the Great is a favorite and I’ve noticed too that Jr. spends a bit of time reading ahead in our read-a-loud books when he can. This past week he has been re-reading some of the history storybooks we have in the house.
