Weekly School Update

This week we began our Ants unit for science. All week long we’ve been studying the world of ants, insect vocabulary and taking a moment to notice the tiny friends all around us. Jr. has been enjoying finding ants in the yard! Just today he brought me two ant friends so that we could look at their little bodies and see the antenna.

We’ve also covered another few lessons in our beginning math book. Its way to simple for him. He must have covered most of what is considered “preschool” math last year. But he’s having fun! We also have more challenging material coming up later after the school year really begins.

For handwriting we covered the first two letter (F & E). He’s not to keen on writing but the program Handwriting Without Tears is fast enough that we can get through the lesson before his enthusiasm wanes. He’s enjoying making chalk letters before his paper letter practice!

On the reading front its been an interesting week. On Wednesday we sorted through some flash cards. He identified various letters and we reviewed the vowels. He still get stuck on “U” and often says “qwuh” for the letter. I think the “Q” & “U” walk together idea is confusing him a bit. Dang leapfrog movie anyway. On Thursday and Friday though my somewhat reluctant reader read a BOB book that as far I am aware he hasn’t been read more than once. And he read them without a lot of help just a few helping sounds and blending for a few new words!! Spectacular :)

That pretty much sums up the content of the week. We made some firework craft projects, he colored a few pictures, watch a couple of educational video (via united streaming) and we read a few books. As well as played trains, took care of the garden, made lego houses, rode bikes down the hill and so on and so on…….

What has Jr. been reading:
Hey Little Ant,
Thinking about Ants
The fascinating world of Ants

Homeschooling on the Horizon?

Today Jr. Picasso read all of the letters to “read” Heinz Tomato Ketchup. I was so proud I almost cried! He and I have been playing with the alphabet uppercase and lowercase for about three months and his recognition is at about 95% for uppercase and above 80% for lowercase. The lowercase letters that he has trouble with are the ones with great similarity (b, p, q, d etc). Still for three-years-old I think he’s doing fantastic!!

Its times like these that I reinforce my interest in homeschooling him. First off at the front is the fact that the poor little bugger cannot attend public school till he’s six due to his birthday being AFTER the cutoff. Second I think about how much he will have learned by that time combined with the less than stellar quality of the available schools and well it makes it a lot easier to consider homeschooling.

Recently in our local paper there was an article about how the very elementary that my little boy would go to will have THREE kindergarten classes next year with an anticipated enrollment of 30 children in each class. 30 5 & 6 year olds…..have mercy on that kindergarten teacher!! And a handfull of those children will be from Altoona!

Altoona? you say.

Yep the powers that be didn’t forcast the growth of the community adequately and therefore do not have enough room for all the children from Altoona IN Altoona. So several families have children in Altoona with there little kindergartener being shipped off to Mitchellville!!
I ask the question – Where do the Mitchellville kids go when there is no room at Mitchellville!?!

And to make it even better the powers that be are now forecasting a 7% community growth in the next five years which I personally think may be a little low and they think that ONE elementary school will be enough to handle it. BUT and here’s the kicker…..the elementary school they are talking about hasn’t even been put to bonding yet…

They don’t have the money yet!!

So I look at my munchkin…sprawled out on the floor in the living room working his “homework” number book or playing “what’s that letter” and I think…..homeschooling him might be fun and it certainly would be less crowded!!!

Article by Diane West I liked. She talks about why a person might decide to take the plunge to homeschool. OpinionJournal – Taste
