Warrior Weekend

This entire last weekend we worked in various capacities on our place. For the kids that meant helping pull weeds and “working” in the pool. For we adults it was much less grand and there was no pool at the end of our jobs.

But our garden looks better. The little chicks have a ramp and I have a new gate to go thru. The lawnmower is fixed again. This time the fix involved taking a good portion of the engine apart to reach the broken pieces. I said many thanks to the fact that my Dad can fix things because the rest of us: not so much!

It was a great weekend filled with interesting things in amongst the work. Things like dragonflies. We counted seven flying above the garden. An interesting bug err beetle. One of the hawks getting bombarded by our red winged blackbirds. The vultures making an appearance and showing again that the numbers of have increased.

And lastly our own animals making themselves known through amusing things they do. Like the little chickens who keep getting under the fence. Or the geese working on flying.

It was a good weekend

Oriole Rescue

The other day we found this little oriole along with his nestmates on the ground the day after excessively strong winds. It seems that the nest simply wasn’t strong enough and appears that the bottom gave way. We debated what to do. The parent birds were still taking care of them on the ground and were actively annoyed at us for going near the babies.

So since the parents were present and still interested we opted to interfere a bit and attempt to save our small orioles:

During the scoop up and put in the “nest” operation the mama bird swooped down on my dear hubby’s head several times. We made short work of getting the nest jug settled. And the next day we were happy to see that the parent birds have adapted to our makeshift nest. We observed from a distance the male feeding the babies several times through out the day. We’ll leave them be and hopefully in a few weeks be able to see the small fledglings first flights!

Delays

Storms have caused a bit of delay in my updates. Of course so has a round of errands. And mario kart racing.

This weekend was nice though storms in the night but decent weather during the day. We played with our geese seeing if we could let them range more. They range alright…right into the oat field!
