So many good conversations

but just not enough time! I’ve been running into lots of good blogging lately. The kind that makes me want to respond or add my thoughts. Then the boys call me away from the computer and I’m off in a different direction entirely. So I’m adding some scattered thoughts here instead of long and thoughtful responses to a few things I’ve run into today.

Pastor Ryan (Reverb) On Tattoos: This made me want to share my thoughts. I don’t have any tattoos. Mostly if you really want the truth because I don’t have a love for needles. And I’ve never found something that I wanted to place on my person permanently yet. But they don’t bother me. Okay the guy completely covered in ink at the state fair gave me the creeps but then he might have given me the creeps without them if you know what I mean. Ink is permanent enough to warrant thought before action. But if it means something to do who am I to say how you decorate and express yourself. Though truthfully the naked woman on the arm of that one guy once….well I would have appreciated if he’d worn a bit longer shirt to the zoo as that was a bit of explaining I had to do with my then 4 year old son.

Momversation
I’m having a good time with these short video discussion panels. I watched the one of over-scheduling kids tonight. This is something I’m constantly at war with internally. As many of you have probably figured out our kids are only in one things: piano. We don’t have them in sports. We don’t do any extra classes like art or karate. I’ve got on my list this spring/summer to do swim lessons for Jr. But for the most part we are content to let them be kids. Here’s where it gets interesting! Beyond the fact that we are homeschooling freaks of nature the second most often commented on thing we do (or in this case don’t do) is what we have our kids involved in. I am often shocked at home much importance strangers or people outside our friend group put on outside activities. I listen to the schedules of a few of our non-homeschooling small people and I’m floored that they have any energy to focus in school. I also always have to resist the urge to ask them when they eat supper what with all the activities they are in. I know our schedule will most likely not remain as “thing” free in the future but I’m not in any hurry to add things in just for the sake of having the boys IN something. Our stance is that if the boys want to pursue it we’ll see what we can do. With the exception of piano and swim lessons. Those two things you will do. Piano for 2 to 4 years and you’ll learn how to swim. All that other stuff will be on your own steam and desire.

The Plucky Knitter Oh how Plucky makes me wish I was not on a money diet. But I am so no shopping for me. She also makes me wish I could feel at home in my local yarn shops which save for Charity’s I don’t. I’m intrigued to see (hopefully) her dye studio evolve. I love other peoples remodel projects! I sometimes things my path to knitting was weird. I was inspired by Poppins and learned from a book and website. I’ve just not found a way to take my knitting into the local arena.  Anyway that lack of connection makes me ever so thankful for the online places I visit. Like Plucky which I actually found via Knitterella whom I also love to visit.

The Magic Fridge!

Frankie this one’s for you!!

As many of my readers know we have a few people here in our multi-generational house. What most of you won’t know is how much that affects our fridge. In fact in can be down right interesting what seems to appear as if by magic in our fridge. When we’re having a few too many complaints from small people about what is being offered or chants of “no food” from picky adults…I’ll turn towards the fridge and declare it a “Magic Refrigerator” meal.

To make this work you *must* grasp the handle and chant “Oh Magic Refrigerator Please Provide Me Some Food for Hungry Children”

And if it is a particularly bad day you might need to plead a bit for good measure (and affect).

Then you open the door and *poof* find food!

It’s amazing!!

Now because it is a Magic Refrigerator you can’t complain at what it hands you after all it’s worked hard to give you something. Which sometimes means you end up with cheese cubes, carrot sticks and a side of pancake! Other times you might find yourself with turkey, cottage cheese and eggrolls. You just never know!!

The boys find this very funny.  But reading through this I think it is much more amusing in person??

3 days of games

One of my favorite things about having all the cousins together is that those that are old enough to play board games do. In fact over the course of a three day weekend most of our favorites make repeated appearances. This year was no different except perhaps that chess played a central role as the “it” game of the weekend.

Chess

White (plastic) versus White (wooden) the most confusing game of the weekend much to the delight of the kids who thought it was particularly funny.

Chess take 2

My second favorite thing is that though we have kids from 4 to 11 playing board games we have few tears or upset. I am constantly surprised as how well they manage to rotate the playing around so that everyone gets to play or choose a game. Our favorites of the weekend were Stratego, Chess and our Professor Noggin games.
