Model Homes

A few weeks ago now we had our first ever Mini-Model Home Show. It was fun and a moderate success. The participating kids had a good time and I really enjoyed hearing from them. The impromptu public speaking about their projects was an unanticipated benefit. All of them did quite well describing the project AND answer questions from the audience.

Jr's Model Home

Model Home from Jr. Love the little people in the sandbox.

Lil'Bs Model Home (funny face)

Love that face! He’s making his draw bridge work.

This wasn’t fully his project. Well it was his project but he had a lot more parent help than I’d hoped. I knew it would be more of a helped project when Lil’B insisted on building a castle. He cut out a lot but all those cuts around the top had to be assisted. Luckily he’s okay with being chief engineer and ordering his “workers” around!

ISU Science Night for Homeschoolers

One word: Awesome.

Okay more words. It was pleasantly crowded but not overwhelming according to my dear husband. The organizers made my son’s night when they announced that SCUM (Society for Undergraduate Chemistry Majors) would be putting on a demonstration for the group at large. He had picked this as a “thing to do” but was younger than the targeted age range. So my dear Jr. was already declaring this night a success in the first minutes. SCUM blew stuff up and did a cotton ball on fire experiment. The cotton ball one was quite impressive since the young man demonstrating held it IN HIS HAND when they lit it. I just wish I could type the way it is to hear Jr. talk about it!

Jr. got to see the Insect Zoo too which was also tops on his list. He built a model with legos (moving 2d to 3d). He looked at how water runoff can destroy/damage things. (He brought the how of this experiment home and last week the boys did this one at home too). He was able to build a circuit of some sort with alligator clips and batteries. He made a candy DNA strand which was fun because he had an “error” in one of his pairings. That error led to several discussions here at home on DNA. He came home with a simple toy and a long explanation of how it behaves here versus in space.

And about another 20 minutes or so of just telling us what he saw and did. I was excited when I first heard ISU was hosting science night. After the fact I’m still excited and am hoping they do this annually because I have a little guy who really wants to go “next time”!

I got nothing

Good week but not really a week that generated much for content!

We added “official” story time to the day which moved the bedtimes stories from READ ME THIS ONE MAMA to parents picks instead. And I think it is helping. Bedtime is going a bit better and we’re reading more during the day.

We played with our mineral kits this week! I’m looking forward to the next two experiments. Best part was taking a look at the minerals under the microscope. Pyrite is so awesome close up.

And that’s about it for content! Okay not really because we did laundry, we baked, we made a birthday chain for Lil’B (65 days), we played piano and lots of other little things!

Hope you had fabulous week!
