Waiting to decide completely until I have had a chance to review Singapore.Though I love Rightstarts manipulative kit. To bad Singapore doesn’t seem to have one. I am leaning towards a combination since Jr. loves the hands-on math.
Reading: Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading
I am picking up the flashcards to this since Jr. gets distracted if I make the cards. He channels his thoughts toward making the cards instead of reading/identifying what’s ON the card. Science: Living Learning Books
I opted for this one instead of R.E.A.L.Science because it seems more suited for kindergarten. I saw LLB described as a good choice for a “light” science year which I would agree with from what I can see in the samples. I think it will be a good choice plus it uses LOTS of great Usborne books!
History: Unit Studies of Dinosaurs & First Peoples (Usbornes 1st History Series)
I am leaning towards using HistoryOdyssey for next year so we may touch on some of the topics/areas covered depending on Jr.’s interest. Mostly I am looking to cover basic prehistory ideas specifically a fun and exciting adventure into Dinosaurs!! (Note: I am aware that we mix science/history here but I figure we can consider a dinosaur unit study “history” if we are looking at geologic history?! Ok to bad this is my plan so phbbbttttt.)
Religious/Character Study: Animal Friends Series by Janette Oke, Becoming Me by Martin Boroson (plus additional books)
We had a discussion (the parents) recently that Jr. overheard at which time he posed the question “Who is God?”. He’s continued touch on what “God” is and how it may affect him so we’ve opted to include some religious study this year. I have always thought Janette Oke has a very gentle way of teaching about what I consider basic christian principles so I am hoping to see that same gentle spirit in her Animal Friends Series.
Handwriting: Handwriting without Tears
Handwriting without Tears is our pick here. Short and simple practice for our budding writer! Jr. enjoys writing though he prefers to do it on his own without interference except when he needs something spelled!!
Possible Add-ons in case we get need more to do:
Basic geography with a My Community Unit. Looking at our city, our state, our region, our country etc…..I have a series of books by Marianne D. Wallace (Prairies & Grasslands, Mountains) as well as a Seasons book that can easily be utilized as part of a combination of field trips, experiments and nature walks…..
More notes to be added later!!
